300 ‘BIG GREEN’ IDEAS – A UNIVERSITY ACTION PLAN

The ‘Big green’ event is one of our ‘off the shelf’ products that can easily be customised to use in a very cost effective way; most often delivered by embedding ourselves within our client’s team.

LCMB (Low Carbon Maintenance & Buildings) adopted this approach for one of their university clients; to involve staff more actively in their carbon reduction strategy as part of the work in helping to make the university’s buildings and estate work harder.

“Working with The Discovery Mill and James has enabled us to deliver a fantastic programme of ‘Big green’ events to help our university client reinforce key messages and generate enthusiasm and involvement in an innovative and visible way.”  John O’Brien – Managing Director, LCMB

Following on from this success, The Discovery Mill will continue to support LCMB with facilitation and support tools on an associate project by project basis; our work being integrated into LMCB’s overall approach by James becoming an Associate Director within the LCMB team.

The programme of events involved three key elements:

The ‘Big green’ ball – the green spark

The giant ball represents the ‘Big green’ challenge; it’s the ‘Big green’ elephant in the room that literally puts the ball in your court.  Engaging and interactive workshops were used to inspire ‘Everyday’ champions.

Result: 80% of participants volunteered to get more involved

Big green’ actions – awareness and feedback

200 people across different university teams came together to share key messages and listen to feedback.  Connecting different perspectives focused attention on what their customers need in a more efficient way.

Result: Refined and simplified strategy, with easy to use support tools

300 ‘Big green’ ideas – involvement and commitment

A quiz and structured questionnaire allowed staff to discuss and share ideas in groups, and feed the best of these onto the ‘Big green’ wall; developing greater commitment by coming up with their own ideas and action plans.

Result: Team-specific action plans to support local carbon targets.
