SOME PROJECT IDEAS FOR 2013

“We’ve already done the thinking – wherever you’re at, we have your next solution.”

Pledge to involve more people

‘Energy management through people’ is proven to deliver more savings: in this example, Organisation (A) delivered 25% energy savings in 3 years using this approach – compare that to a similar organisation (B) that didn’t.  By Year 4 has equated to £1.5m (30%) savings overall.

‘Energy management through people’ is about finding more and more energy saving opportunities that are inevitably there. The secret is to engage and enable more and more staff and teams, particularly those who are closest to the customers and so best understand their needs.

Bigger Locked-in savings

This example shows an embedded approach delivering £1.8m (10%) bigger savings than the previous building’s ‘commissioned’ performance.

Better longer-term performance is guaranteed by fine-tuning strategies for easier operations and continuous improvement by tapping into local expertise and asking for user feedback - designing-out risks associated with more traditional approaches to building commissioning.

An Education action plan

This picture shows the output from a university ‘Big green’ event – showing 300 pledges and actions for energy savings; promoting key messages and digging deeper than traditional carbon management plans.

Developed in partnership means that the action plan is jointly developed by the estates team and colleges, built in a bottom-up format during the event.

We use these events like this to introduce our skills development toolkits and smart phone apps to help do the facilitation required in a very efficient and effective way.

Quick ‘Win Win’ HVAC solutions

Challenging for quick wins (a 3 month challenge) produced £83k savings for this hospital to kick off the process; quick wins being  generated by individuals in areas they knew well.

Making it all about people sets us up for the next stage of the process, bringing different people and teams together for bigger and bigger savings – and promoting the ‘what’s in it for them’.

Roll-out lighting projects

Empowering people already on the ground, and involving them in projects, is a very cost effective method for delivering capital investment programmes.

We set standardised best value solutions by involving users and tapping into the local expertise of operational teams. Projects are delivered through a rolling programme of quick action response, combined with logbooks for continuous commissioning and optimisation.

Continuous equipment utilisation reviews

Facilitated equipment reviews are a key part of our approach; undertaken with the person who knows the equipment best - in this case utilisation was found to be less than 5%.

All equipment, lighting & HVAC systems can be reviewed in terms of utilisation. In this example, our On-Demand approach saved over 90%, doubling the savings expected from industry best practice controls set-ups.

On-demand leadership and management means being absolutely confident you have exploited all cost effective demand-side energy management opportunities and that you are only using what you need.
