CARBON SAVER – TURN ME ON

We are putting out a call for expressions of interest for project partners and testers.

This new Discovery project, launching in the autumn, will develop and pilot new ways to engage and motivate people and staff to get more involved in contributing to energy and carbon reduction.

We are particularly looking for facilities and building owner operators, energy and environmental managers who are interested in trying out and testing new ideas.

The vision

  • Imagine an energy management toolkit that compels people to commit to large-scale change and taps into their individual expertise, imagination and natural leadership skills.
  • Picture a system that is extremely easy to use; where taking a photo, adding a simple description and pushing a button on a smart phone can capture ideas and kick off the process to contribute – delivering significant energy and carbon savings at work.
  • People’s actions are driven because success is rewarded first (based on their preferred motivators) and because they always know how well they are doing.  It is a system that is centred on a community, and a culture of practice, whereby people can easily swap and share experiences, work in teams and give themselves an edge.
  • Organisations can easily continuously develop carbon management plans, log changes in strategy and tactics, continually learn lessons, and promote and celebrate success.

Direction

  • On-demand energy management is focused on ‘Best Value’ – making absolutely sure you only use what you need.  Look to reduce total power and operational time to match the customer’s needs, eliminating any ‘non-value add’ and avoidable waste.
  • Involves those people who are closest to and best placed to understand the (changing) needs of users – those who can identify good opportunities for carbon reduction and, most importantly, are in a position to help sustain any changes after the programme finishes.
  • Core principles are local ownership, ‘Win Win’ solutions and continuous improvement – helping to push boundaries, challenge current thinking and put people at the heart of energy management success.
  • Do the right thing; fosters a sense of accomplishment and pride in getting things done.

Project success looks like:

  • A simple system, valued by users, that proactively facilitates action and savings rather than being an over-complicated counting machine.
  • A credible system, that can be seen to drive top-down improvement results, that continues to build savings and runs better year on year, leaving a legacy when key people move on and making sure results are locked-in long-term.
  • ‘Win Win’– tailored to deliver energy/carbon reduction and cost savings as well as benefiting those who are in control of energy use – where greater people involvement and skills means bigger savings and less stress in hitting targets.
