HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND BEST WISHES FOR 2020

We wish you a very merry Christmas and all our best wishes for 2020. Wow, what a year 2019 has been!  We (officially) now have a ‘climate crisis’, the UK has stretched its climate goals to net zero carbon by 2050 and has signed up to the 3% energy efficiency club for year on year improvements; there’s never been so much pressure on reducing energy consumption for a low carbon future that’s affordable and positive for all. It’s been a very... Read More

EXERGY – MAKING ENERGY WASTE VISIBLE

Do you know your ultimate levels of energy waste inherent in your existing processes and facilities? When looking at energy in terms of its service requirements, we find the levels of avoidable energy waste (in red) really jump out at you, compared to the minimum energy input required (illustrated in green).   We think of this as ‘waste’ as its adds no value or benefit to our customers. ‘Exergy’ describes the maximum useful work can be... Read More

THINK OF ENERGY AS A SERVICE – CPD ARTICLE

Back in the late 1980s Amory Lovins, of the Rocky Mountain Institute in the US, first used the term ‘Negawatt’ to describe the unit of power saved through energy conservation and better efficiency (i.e. saved MWs). His premise was that this one concept could drive the change required to reduce our dependence on consuming excessive amounts of energy within our society. He argues that customers want energy services such as lighting, heating, hot... Read More

COGNITIVE ENERGY EFFICIENCY REVOLUTION

The vision of the ESTA Behaviour Change group is that ‘Cognitive Energy will generate 10% of energy reduction savings through Behaviour Change by 2025/30’ (ie deliver at least 50% of the UK’s clean growth 20% target for energy efficiency). We ran an industry round table workshop in Swindon last month, involving twenty different organisations across the sector. The overwhelming read-out was that we need to do so much more to help galvanise the... Read More

THE BIG GREEN BALL IS BACK!

Those that came along to the aM&T conference in Coventry last month, would have seen that the Big green ball is back, making an appearance on the Discovery Mill stand. This means, we’ve dusted down the ball and accompanying big green event collateral and offering it as an option that can be used for energy and sustainability management through people projects again. The big green ball was originally launched at Heathrow Airport back in 2009... Read More

AVOIDABLE ENERGY WASTE IS EVERYWHERE

As I walk round the UK, I see avoidable energy waste everywhere; you never have to look too far. Some of it is very visible but, in my experience, for what you can see, there’s so much more you can’t see. Significant levels of avoidable energy waste across most of our facilities and operations seems inevitable at the moment; this is much more widespread than most people think.  Many energy systems are left ‘on’ most of the time to maximise... Read More

CONGRATULATIONS

Heathrow Airport was picked out particularly for the recent step change in its approach to sustainability... Read More

2018 AND BEYOND

Season’s greetings and a happy new year from us all. We continue to love living down in Devon. Our house project is complete and the boys are growing up fast.  The second sunspace has now finished in the house.  The latest project is setting up an aquaponics system in the garden. The office is still just across the road so we have a great work life balance. On the work front, one highlight has been a collaborative project involving ten key business... Read More
